Low-cost carrier Volaris Airlines is expanding its reach with three new direct routes connecting San José, Costa Rica, to Tulum, Miami, and Orlando. The new flights begin this July, offering travelers more affordable ways to reach top destinations in the Mexican Caribbean and Florida.

Starting July 1, Volaris will operate daily flights to Orlando. Direct flights to Tulum will run four times a week beginning July 2 (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays), while service to Miami starts July 4 with four weekly flights (Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays). Introductory one-way fares start at $79 plus taxes for Miami and Tulum, and $89 plus taxes for Orlando.

The airline, known for its ultra-low-cost model, becomes the only budget carrier to fly direct from Costa Rica’s capital to Miami and Orlando, competing with major airlines like American Airlines, Avianca, JetBlue, Southwest, and Spirit. The new Tulum route marks the first direct air link between Costa Rica and this sought-after Mexican destination.

“This growth reflects the strong demand from Costa Ricans and Central Americans for affordable travel,”said Ronny Rodríguez, Volaris’s Director of Corporate Development and Sustainability. He noted that the expansion also celebrates Volaris Costa Rica’s ninth anniversary as a national carrier.

Strengthening Tourism and Regional Ties

Costa Rica’s Tourism Minister, William Rodríguez, highlighted the strategic impact of these routes. “Expanding connections with Florida and the Mexican Caribbean will strengthen Costa Rica’s position as a regional hub, attract more visitors, and boost local economies,” he said.

Last year alone, Costa Rica welcomed 1.6 million U.S. tourists, while Mexico remains its third-largest tourism market. The direct route to Tulum is expected to benefit travelers in both directions, offering Costa Ricans a seamless link to one of Mexico’s most popular destinations.

The new flights join Volaris’s existing routes to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancun, Guatemala, and Los Angeles, with Guadalajara’s frequency doubling in July due to rising demand.

Since 2015, Volaris has flown more than 2.4 million passengers from San José, helping drive tourism, trade, and investment across Central America and North America. The airline’s expansion further cements San José’s role as a key gateway for regional travel.
